The MiG-27 variable geometry wing fighter-bomber (NATO code Flogger D) was developed by the Soviet aviation industry to enhance the capabilities of its predecessor, the MiG-23BN (NATO code Flogger-H) fighter to make it more efficient in carrying out ground attack missions and close support. The aerodynamic layout is in fact the same as the MiG-23BN fighter from which it differs for the new air intakes and many of the electronic devices. Over the years, new and increasingly sophisticated versions have served, mainly in the Soviet Front Air Force. In the MiG-27 the offensive armament has also been improved with the adoption of a new 6-barrel 30 mm gun. more powerful than that installed on the Mig-23BN, and the ability to carry an offensive load, including sophisticated air-to-surface missiles, exceeding 4,000 kg
